RESPOND-AFRICA Postgraduate Fellowship

About the Award: The NIHR Research Partnership for the Control of Chronic Diseases in Africa (RESPOND-AFRICA), is a partnership between researchers, health policymakers, and other stakeholders from Tanzania, Uganda, and the UK, conducting clinical and public health studies on the control of chronic diseases in Africa.

Our research partners include the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) in Tanzania and the MRC/UVRI/LSHTM Uganda Research Unit and we collaborate with other institutions in Tanzania and Uganda and with various researchers in the UK Spain, Ireland and Norway.

The second year will be an attachment based at one of our partner institutions in Tanzania or Uganda working as a statistician or an epidemiologist to gain on-the-job training in clinical, public health or population based research in chronic diseases. Our focus at present is the control of hypertension, diabetes and HIV-infection. We are planning to expand to incorporate mental health in the near future.

Eligibility:

  • To be eligible, candidates must be resident in and be a national of an African country, have an excellent first degree in mathematics, medical statistics or very closely related subject, have at least one year experience of working in Africa as a statistician or epidemiologist and be able to meet English language requirements for study in the UK. He/she should be interested in research on the control of chronic diseases.
  • Although our preference is for applicants wishing to study the MSc full-time and face-to-face in London, we will consider applicants wishing to study an on-line MSc course provided they can complete their study and attachment within 3 years.

We would particularly welcome applications from women, and from Tanzanian and Ugandan nationals.

Value of Award: The fellowship will provide full tuition fees, stipend, and one return air fare to London and a competitive salary during the 12-month attachment on a scientist scale at the MRC/UVI/LSHTM Uganda Research Unit or NIMR Tanzania.

Duration of Award: 2 years.
