Master Ethan Edric Kweku Nartey, a Form two (2) pupil of the University of Ghana Basic School (UBS), has emerged winner of the 2019/2024 edition of the Ghana Cyber Robotics Coding Competition. Known in the competition as Team EthanE, he came tops with a total score of 1431. His school mate, Daniel Asamoah, who is in Form 1 (one) placed eighth with 550 points. Ethan came first ahead of competitors from various basic and high schools across the country.
The competition which targets all students, irrespective of the level of education affords participants the opportunity to program, authorize and control virtual robots. The competition, organized by the Ghana Education Service, was the first to be held in Ghana and Africa. This year’s competition featured Forty-six (46) finalists from first and second cycle schools in public and private institutions.
In her opening remarks, Chairperson of the Basic School Management Board, Dr. Jemima Anderson expressed immense gratitude to teachers, trainers, sponsors and the winners for their efforts towards crowning the school as the winner of the competition.
University of Ghana Basic School Pupil Wins
Dr. Anderson intimated that Cyber Robotics Coding Competition is a global ground breaking online robotics competition that engages students in coding programs. She disclosed that the competition which began last year, reached its climax in May this year after several stages of gaming and competition.
Mr. Shadrack Agyiri, Coach of the UBS Cyber Robotics and Coding Team, congratulated the winners. He praised them for their hard work and encouraged them to remain resolute in their pursuit of excellence wherever they find themselves.
In his brief remarks, Master Ethan Nartey, the Ultimate Award Winner of the Cyber Robotics and Coding Competition expressed profound appreciation to the Almighty God for giving him the strength to overcome some he some hiccups he encountered during the competition. He lauded the Headmaster, Mr. Alfred Codjoe-Allotey for providing the enabling environment and logistical support before and during the competition.
He also acknowledged the support of the Coach, Mr. Shadrack Agyiri, who urged him on when he lagged behind by ten minutes due to network challenges on the final day of the competition. He also thanked the sponsors, the Robo Group and Intelitek Inc. for the sponsorship. To his school mates who will be representing the school next year, he gave them the words of Albert Schweitzer “Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful”.
The team was presented with two (2) brand new EV3 Lego Mindstorms Robotics Kits and a laptop computer.
